ADOPTING A PET

  1. Can I get some information on a specific animal available for adoption?
Every animal available for adoption has a profile that provides their approximate age and breed, sex, and a description of their personality. You can read these by looking at animals available for adoption. If you need additional information about an animal, you can speak to an adoption counselor at the SPCA of Wake County Curtis Dail Pet Adoption Center or by calling 919-772-2326. We cannot give out specific information about the animal’s previous owners, potential adopters, or previous veterinarians. We can let callers know if an animal is still available, if it was surrendered by its owner or a stray, what types of behavior has been observed since coming into our care, and any potential health issues it may have.

GIVING UP A PET

  1. How do I give up my pet to you?
For information about giving up your pet, click here.
  2. How can my animal get into the Adoption Program?
If your pet or the stray animal you are bringing in is evaluated by the SPCA staff to be in 1-reasonably good health, 2-of sound temperament, 3-and there is space available in the adoption program, then that animal will receive an Adoption Guarantee.
  3. What is an Adoption Guarantee?
The SPCA’s Adoption Guarantee is a promise to an animal that he/she will be placed into a home. (Excludes pets who develop severe medical or behavioral problems.) This means we will not euthanize reasonably healthy animals once they are in our Adoption Program. This commitment that we have made to animals already in our care, might mean that we will not euthanize an animal just to make room for the animal you brought in.
  4. Can you tell me right away if my pet will receive an Adoption Guarantee?
Because kennel space changes on a minute-to-minute basis at both SPCA facilities, we cannot offer a guarantee UNTIL the animal is accepted into our Adoption Program.
  5. Why is an Adoption Guarantee important?
The SPCA’s goal is to end the euthanasia of ALL healthy and friendly pets in Wake County. Working toward the goal of saving all animals starts with a commitment to one animal. That commitment is not to end its life just to make room for another.

VOLUNTEERING

  1. How do I become a volunteer?
For information about becoming a volunteer, click here
    .
  2. Can I perform court-ordered Community Service at the SPCA?
If you are volunteering to complete a court-ordered community service mandate (traffic tickets or misdemeanors), those are done at the SPCA Lost & Found Center. To perform this community service, email the Lost & Found manager, no orientation is needed.

SPAY/NEUTER

  1. What types of low-cost spay/neuter services do you provide?
For information about low-cost spay/neuter services, click here.

PET CARE

  1. Are there any programs to help individual pet owners with personal pet medical bills?
There are no low cost clinics or funds available in this area to assist pet owners with routine vaccines or emergency situations. There are occasional rabies clinics sponsored by local animal control organizations, but other vaccines are not required by law and so are not offered at these clinics. The SPCA of Wake County recommends that you contact veterinarians in your area and ask for pricing since fees vary from practice to practice. For emergencies, we recommend that you contact your regular veterinarian or a veterinarian used by a family member or friend for referrals and to see if they will extend any financial courtesy.

ANIMAL CRUELTY

  1. How can I report a case of animal cruelty/neglect?
Animal control, a branch of local law enforcement, responds to reports of animal cruelty/neglect. To contact your animal control, click here.
